(Nassehi 1998a:156)

[2]) "Marxism's influence on Functionalism is part of the still unwritten history of the Functional Sociology that developed in a middle-class society where Marxism was politically anathema, where the taint of Marxism could cripple academic careers, where Marxism was often dismissed out of hand as an outdated theory or as a mere ideology or, as a 'religion' by those same people who otherwise professed to a respect for religion. In such circumstances, some Functionalists found the use of Marxism so inexpedient and dangerous that they repressed their own awareness of their own actual reliance upon it, so that they would not feel anxious about using it, and, at least, simply screened out its open manifestations so they would not be subject to reprisals. If this conception of the matter seems discrepant with the self-image that academic scholars in the West have of their own intellectual autonomy and moral courage, those who lived through (and still allow themselves to remember) the impact of the McCarthy repression will know that it is not overdrawn: if generals and senators were intimidated, so too were professors. Thus some Functionalists borrowed from Marxism, but discreetly or somnambulistically." (Gouldner 1971a:448f) - "Increasingly, the policy of the Republican leadership in the House and Senate resembles that of another era - that of Senator Robert Taft in the wake of the 1948 presidential election. The heyday of bipartisanship was actually between 1946 and 1948, when the Republicans, emboldened by their winning of a majority in Congress for the first time in 18 years, prepared for another electoral triumph in the presidential campaign of 1948. When Harry Truman upset all predictions and defeated the internationalist former governor of New York, Thomas Dewey, the bitterness of the Republicans showed itself not only in the ad hominem attacks by Senator Joseph McCarthy in his hysterical anticommunist crusade, but also in Senator Taft, who hoped to gain the Republican presidential nomination in 1952, a prize he had vainly sought since 1940."

[3] ) „But since foreign policy has usually been within the frame of moral rather than pragmatic discourse, the debate in the fifties became centered in moral terms. And the singular fact about the Communist problem is that, on a scale rare in American life, an ideological issue was equated with a moral issue and the attacks on communism were made with all the compulsive moral fervor which was possible because of the compulsive moral fervor which was possible because of the equation of communism with sin." (Bell 1965a:120)

[4]) wie sie Bhatt (1999a:80f) etwa im alten wie neuen Hinduismus sieht: „... the idea that ancient ‘wisdom’ and ‘light’, the (perceptually deferred) ‘secrets’ of nature and the universe were apprehended by superhuman ‘seers’ function exhaustively in modern projects as dogmatic but barren signifiers. These projects are not about the enormously complicated social and cultural histories of Hinduism that are shielded from their followers, but are concerned instead to create subjects anew, subjects whose ‘ownmost being’ is automatically equated with the qualities of purity, righteousness, truth, innocence and bliss. This subjectivity that arbitrarily demands acknowledgement of its superlative, transcendental, primal wisdom is a subjectivity that is constituted by a fundamental arrogance that its claims of rectitude, bliss and purity can barely mask."
